Village News SAFER COMMUNITIES AND NEIGHBOURHOODS ACT The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act gives residents a way to take back their neighbourhoods by reporting problem residences and businesses. It helps target and, if necessary, shut down buildings and land that are used routinely for illegal activities such as:
An investigative unit is in place to respond to community concerns about suspected illegal activity. The act also creates a process to remove building fortifications that cause public safety concerns, or exceed reasonable security measures. These fortifications may stop emergency response personnel, law enforcement, or occupants from gaining access to or escaping from these buildings in an emergency. This act is not criminal legislation designed to punish offenders. Rather, it provides a civil process to shut down properties where these illegal activities are taking place. The identity of the person making a complaint is entirely confidential. The legislation prohibits the identity of the person who complains from being revealed at any time without their written consent. The complainant will not be involved in any investigative or court proceedings that may result from the complaint. If you are suspicious of a property in your neighbourhood, do not investigate it yourself or approach the occupants. Please call 1-877-826-2122.
