NEW BRUNSWICK MERIT AWARD PRESENTATIONS
The New Brunswick Merit Awards recognize contributions and efforts of
outstanding citizens in the community in six fields of endeavours: Arts &
Culture; Business; Community Leadership; Environment; Sport, Recreation and
Active Living; and Volunteer Service.
Arts & Culture - An individual who has
contributed to the support, encouragement and development of arts and culture in
the community with performing arts.
MARGARET HARRIMAN is the Salisbury Adult Learning Center! In 1995 she
began teaching at the Center. Margaret worked tirelessly and without pay,
putting her heart and soul into finding a place to house the center. In
October 2006, she opened an independent Salisbury Adult Learning Center.
Students range from 15-82 years of age. One of her students became the sole
winner of the Canadian National GED Award. Encouraging her students to
write, several students have won Northrup Frye First Time Writer’s Awards.
The center will be open for the first time in the summer this year. Margaret
will be holding Life Writing Classes, and are beginning to offer workshops
on Internet Safety, Pet Maintenance, and Wills to name a few.
Business - A business that demonstrated community support through job
creation, quality service, monetary contributions, or with gift/services in
kind toward the development and growth of their community.
THE PIZZA MILL has been serving the community since 1998. They have been
big supporters of the Community and have done many other fundraising events
for charities like the SPCA and Christmas Charities in Philippines and
Uganda.
Community Leadership - An individual who demonstrates leadership
through unselfish contributions to community organizations.
JUDY MARSHALL works tirelessly with various individuals and groups in our
community. She has volunteered with St. John Ambulance for many years. She
has volunteered to be our Critical Incident Stress Management &
Emergency Medical Operations Officer for our Emergency Plan, taking courses
every year to keep up to date. She has also coordinated Neighbourhood
Watch/Community Based Policing for several years. She is always ready and
willing to help you with anything you need including purchasing candy for
the parade and catering your meals. She has received numerous awards over
the years including her Serving Sisters.
Environment - An individual, organization or business that has made a
significant contribution to protecting the environment and/or actively
promoted public awareness.
WESTMORLAND ALBERT SOLID WASTE COMMISSION - The
beginnings of a regional solid waste management program in
Westmorland and Albert counties can be traced back to the
latter part of 1987. In February of 1988, the Provisional
Committee for Westmorland-Albert was formed. After years of
planning, extensive consultations, and assessments,
operations began in November of 1992. By early 1993, all 21
polluting dumps closed. With the many recycling programs,
53% of the waste was diverted in 2006.
Sport & Recreation (Active Living) -
An individual or team that
has excelled in the area of competition or sportsmanship; or one individual
or organization that promotes or facilitates the development of recreation
or active living in their community.
RAY GILLIS has coached both hockey and ball for many years. He started
coaching hockey back in 1979 and still coaches to this day. He’s won 5
Midget A provincial championships in hockey from 1997 to 2004 and was named
coach of the year in 1998-99 for New Brunswick.
He has also coached ball since 1980. He has won 7 Junior Mens Provincial
Championships, from 1989 to 1999. He was the assistant coach for the Summer
Games team in 1989 in Saskatoon. He has coached mini mites right up to the
Junior B ranks. With the majority of his coaching being Midget A in
Petitcodiac over the last 15 years. In 1999 he won the 3M Coaching Award for
Canada and also won coach of the year for Softball New Brunswick that same
year. His heart and love for the game helped both sons, Kris and Ryan, achieve
in sports over the years. Kris feels his father was a huge part as to why he
made Team Canada in 92-93 and was MVP for the World Championship in New
Zealand.
Volunteer Service - An individual for his or her charitable
contribution to their community through volunteer service efforts.
WAYNE GLADSTONE has been very active in the community for many years with
the St. John Ambulance. Joining the brigade when he moved back home in 1973
he has served as Transportation Officer and now as Superintendent. He has
volunteer with several organizations over the years including Cubs &
Scouts, Millennium Park Playground, and with our Emergency Plan. He has been
called to help the RCMP several times with Search and Rescue and is always helping our local seniors and widows with odd jobs around their houses. He
has received numerous awards including his Serving Brother. You may catch a
glimpse of him chasing dogs around the village.
MAYOR’S AWARD PRESENTATION
The Mayor’s Award is designed to recognize and reinforce youth and youth
leaders whose outstanding achievements and contributions encourage endeavour
that serve in some way to improve the quality of our life together in our
community.
Mayor’s Award for Youth is for potential recipients 19 years of age
or younger who have made a contribution in any of a number of areas.
This year
the Mayor’s Award for Youth is awarded to SHELBY MURRAY. Shelby is a
remarkable young lady with an enormous amount of talent. For those of you who
don’t know her, Shelby is a self taught pianist who is always ready and
willing to play. You can sometimes see or hear her play at the Irving Big Stop.
She volunteers for numerous events like the Terry Fox Run, jam session and has
graciously volunteered to play for us later tonight and on Sunday at the park.
Mayor’s Award for Sports is for potential recipients who have
brought distinction to themselves and this community in their chosen field of
sports. This year the Mayor’s Award for sports is awarded to KELSEY MCNEIL.
Kelsey is a talented young figure skater who has won several competitions and a
bronze medal at the Canada Winter Games. I am certain that one day we will be
watching her win in the Olympics!
Mayor’s Award for a Leader is for potential recipients 20 years of
age or older who have contributed to the success of young adults. This year the
Mayor’s Award for a Leader is awarded to TRENT STEEVES. Trent has worked for
many years with the 580 Air Marshal Hugh Campbell Squadron Royal Canadian Air
Cadets and gives his heart and soul to the success of the youth.
